5 Tips for Making Your Hair Extensions Last Longer

Hair extensions are an investment — and like any investment, the more you care for them, the longer they'll pay off. Whether you're wearing clip-ins, micro loops, or tape-ins, these five tips will help you get the most out of your extensions and keep them looking gorgeous for months to come.
1. Wash with Sulfate-Free Products
This is the single most important rule for extension care. Sulfates are harsh cleansing agents found in many mainstream shampoos — they strip natural oils from the hair shaft, causing dryness, frizz, and accelerated shedding in extensions. Because extensions don't receive natural oils from the scalp the way your own hair does, they're especially vulnerable to moisture loss.
Switch to a sulfate-free, moisturizing shampoo and a lightweight, hydrating conditioner. Apply conditioner from mid-length to ends only — keeping it away from the bonds or rings will help them stay secure.
2. Brush Gently — and Often
Tangling is one of the main reasons extensions degrade faster than they should. Brush your hair at least twice a day using a soft-bristle or loop brush designed for extensions. Always start from the ends and work upward in small sections, never yanking from the roots. Before bed, gently detangle and loosely braid or tie your hair to prevent overnight knotting.
3. Minimize Heat Exposure
Heat is a double-edged sword with extensions. While human hair extensions can be styled with heat tools, excessive or daily use will cause the hair to dry out, become brittle, and shed faster. When you do use heat, always apply a heat protectant spray first, and keep your tools on a lower temperature setting (ideally below 350°F). Air drying whenever possible is the kindest option for extension longevity.
4. Protect Your Hair While You Sleep
Eight hours of friction against a cotton pillowcase can cause significant tangling and matting. Make the switch to a silk or satin pillowcase, which allows your hair to glide smoothly as you move during sleep. Alternatively, wrap your hair in a loose silk scarf or sleep in a low, loose braid to keep everything in place. This small change can add weeks — sometimes months — to the life of your extensions.
5. Schedule Regular Maintenance
Even with the best at-home care, extensions need periodic professional or DIY maintenance. For micro loop and tape-in extensions, this means moving attachment points upward every 6–8 weeks as your natural hair grows. Skipping maintenance causes the extensions to slide down, creating visible gaps and putting stress on your natural hair. For clip-ins, periodically wash and deep-condition the wefts separately to refresh them.
