Micro loop hair extensions are one of the most popular methods for adding length and volume — and the good news is that with a little patience, you can apply them at home. Whether you're new to extensions or looking to switch up your method, this step-by-step guide walks you through everything you need to know.

What Are Micro Loop Hair Extensions?

Micro loop (also called micro ring or micro bead) extensions use tiny metal rings to attach small wefts of hair to your natural strands — no heat, no glue, no chemicals. They're gentle on your hair and can last up to three months with proper care, making them one of the most sought-after types of hair extensions for everyday wear.

What You'll Need

  • Micro loop hair extensions (100% human Remy hair recommended)

  • A micro ring pulling needle/loop tool

  • Micro ring pliers (closing and opening pliers)

  • Rat-tail comb for sectioning

  • Hair clips to separate sections

  • A mirror (front and back)

Step-by-Step Application Guide

Step 1: Prepare Your Natural Hair

Start with clean, dry, and completely tangle-free hair. Wash with a sulfate-free shampoo and let it air dry or blow dry on a low setting. Avoid applying conditioner near the roots, as this can make the hair too slippery for the micro rings to grip.

Step 2: Section Your Hair

Using your rat-tail comb, create a horizontal parting about 1–2 inches above the nape of your neck. Clip the rest of your hair up and out of the way. This bottom layer is where you'll start.

Step 3: Thread the Micro Ring

Slide a micro ring onto the loop needle. Take a small section of your natural hair (about the same thickness as the extension strand) and thread it through the needle loop. Pull the natural hair through the ring until both the ring and extension are sitting about half an inch from your scalp.

Step 4: Clamp the Ring

Once the extension strand and your natural hair are both through the ring, use your closing pliers to flatten the ring securely. Don't over-clamp — firm but gentle is the goal. The ring should feel secure without causing tension on your scalp.

Step 5: Work in Rows

Continue applying extensions along that first section, spacing them about a centimeter apart. Release the next row of hair and repeat, working your way up the head. Leave at least an inch of natural hair around your hairline untouched for the most natural look.

Tips for Long-Lasting Results

  • Sleep with your hair in a loose braid or low ponytail to prevent tangling

  • Brush gently from ends to roots using a loop brush

  • Avoid applying oil or heavy products directly to the rings

  • Schedule maintenance appointments every 6–8 weeks to move rings up as hair grows
